ADHD Q&A

What is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

ADHD is one of the most common mental health disorders that affect children, impacting about 9.6% of school-age children, 2.4% of young children aged 2-5, and 13.6% of teens.

Usually, ADHD develops in childhood, but symptoms can manifest in adulthood, and adult ADHD is not uncommon. ADHD may have a genetic component.

Children with ADHD are categorized as either primarily inattentive or primarily hyperactive. If a child demonstrates symptoms from both categorizations, Dr. Ayeni diagnoses them with combined ADHD.

ADHD symptoms persist and, without treatment, can become quite difficult to manage. Children with ADHD may struggle with success in school, home, and social settings.

When should I suspect my child has ADHD?

The following symptoms indicate that your child may benefit from a diagnostic assessment for ADHD:

  • Trouble sitting still
  • Inability to wait for one’s turn, pay attention, or follow directions
  • Risky behavior or actions
  • Frequently interrupting others
  • Regular fidgeting
  • Problems keeping toys or other belongings organized
  • Running, jumping, or other activity that’s inappropriate for the situation

It’s not unusual for a teacher or caregiver to first notice the signs of ADHD and bring them to a parent's attention. These types of providers may be more aware of what behaviors fall out of line with normal childhood behavior.

How can you help my child with ADHD?

Dr. Ayeni does a thorough evaluation to diagnose your child. He’ll have you answer specific questions and sit with your son or daughter. He may also ask to interview others who see your child regularly, like extended family, nannies, or teachers.

Once your child is diagnosed with ADHD, Dr. Ayeni offers many effective ways to help them thrive despite their disorder. Treatment helps your child live a full, active, and rewarding life.

Early treatment also teaches them how to manage their ADHD as they age.

Dr. Ayeni helps your child build and develop the skills they need to thrive. He provides therapy and counseling to help them learn how to understand and process emotions. ADHD therapy also supports kids in managing everyday tasks.

While behavioral therapy is usually the first line of treatment, some children can benefit from medication to help them manage ADHD. Medications act differently – some help improve focus while others balance brain chemicals. Dr. Ayeni carefully considers your child’s case when recommending medication type and dosing.
